Atlanta, GA - October 30, 2009 — On Friday, October 30, 2009, Dr. Arthur Keys was honored in Atlanta by the Emory University Alumni Board with the 2009 Emory Medal for his many years of humanitarian service. Dr. Keys earned a Doctorate of Ministry from the Emory University Candler School of Theology in 1992.
The ceremony audience included Dr. Keys’ family; Board of Directors members John Deckenback, Vera Silverman, John Gilbert, and Roland Johnson; IRD staff Adriana Guinand, Lori West, and Lloyd Rollins; and IRD’s Emory interns Maria Presley, Aquarius Gilmer, Jane Li, Kerr Ramsay, and Gretchen Van Ess, as well as other Emory alumni and guests.
The evening started with welcoming remarks by Paul McLarty, Emory Alumni Board President, and an invocation by The Rev. John “Jack” Gilbert, Jr. There was entertainment by Emory’s own “No Strings Attached” all male a cappella group followed by dinner. Short films documenting the lives and work of Dr. Keys and Henry Bowden, Jr., the other medal recipient, were shown. McLarty and Emory President Jim Wagner then read the citations about each recipient and presented them with the medals.
“My Emory years helped toughen up my intellectual stamina to engage in public discourse as I practiced the politics of development and humanitarian assistance,” said Dr. Keys during his acceptance speech. “I will wear the Emory Medal with pride. Thank you all.”
