Baghdad, Iraq - December 20, 2009 — On the 20th of December, IRD completed construction on 300 shelters for the UNHCR Returnees program in Iraq. The program is enabling families to return to their hometown of Saba al Bor outside Baghdad after conflict forced them to leave last year. The shelters were completed before the 31st of December deadline and under budget through the effort of IRD’s engineering team in the field, led by Kefah Ahmed. With the program funding leftovers, IRD will build additional shelters, so UNHCR will have approximately 10 percent more shelters than outlined in the original proposal. An article in the NY Times about security challenges in the town appears here.
