Our Stories
Yemen is one of the least developed countries in the world ranking 153 out of 177 countries in the UN Development Program’s Human Development Report of 2007. Nonetheless this ancient country is rich in culture and traditions. Its citizens are famous for their independence, resisting national authority when they believe it does not represent their needs. International Relief & Development (IRD) is providing a new way for rural Yemenis—over 70 percent of the population—to participate and communicate their concerns.
The Grassroots Theater Initiative (GTI) is designed to bring theater to villages as a means of community mobilization in a country where storytelling is a central part of the culture.
Building on the methodology of Brazilian theater activist Augusto Boal, IRD is using plays to reach the heart of local issues and promote community participation and activism, and contribute to increased stability in rural areas of Yemen.
Together with Palestinian experts in Boal’s methodology, IRD is training local actors in these theater techniques in which audience members take on an active role in the production. Through theater, poetry, and dance, IRD is encouraging communities to discuss pressing issues such as tribal conflict, water rights, and food availability. “Town hall” meetings with tribal, civil, and religious leaders held after the performances reinforce the themes from the performance and provide another opportunity for community members to have their voices heard.
