Our Stories
There are an estimated 1 million people living with HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia today. IRD is building the capacity of Ethiopian organizations to implement development programs that address poverty-driven HIV transmission and economic barriers to HIV care. As a partner with international and Ethiopian implementers of the USAID/Ethiopia Strengthening Communities’ Response to HIV/AIDS project, IRD is integrating economic development into HIV care and prevention. IRD’s economic strengthening team will develop a selection of economic options, such as small-scale livestock and farming, market development, and entrepreneurial promotion for local communities to adapt to their local area. By creating more business opportunities, IRD hopes to break the downward spiral of poverty and disease that can haunt a family for many generations.
The approximately 30,000 families reached each year will be encouraged to diversify income-generating activities and make use of simple technologies, such as mobile phones and bicycles, to add value, efficiency, and competitiveness to their business activities. Regardless of the particular activity they choose, participants will have access to the required tools, microcredit, and mechanisms for saving and reinvestment.
IRD will also work with community organizations to create a broader community safety net. As HIV progresses and family resources are depleted, community members play a critical role in providing economic support to HIV-affected households. Drawing on the cultural value of extended family, IRD will train local organizations to bring communities and leaders together to address the economic needs of HIV-affected families. Finally, IRD will advocate for economic policies that support family income generation, such as inheritance and access to land, and long-term economic stability, reducing economic barriers to education and health care.
