| Children like these will benefit from IRD programs in Zimbabwe |
IRD has been working in Zimbabwe since 2009 to improve water, sanitation and hygiene; and food and agriculture systems. IRD implements the USAID-funded Peri-urban Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting (PROOF) program to increase access to safe water in high population density and rural areas. Rooftop rainwater harvesting is an interim measure that helps ease water supply challenges in the country. Through PROOF, IRD has built rainwater harvesting infrastructure in eight schools and 2,653 households, serving a total of 26,321 beneficiaries.
IRD also implements the USAID-funded Restoring Livelihoods–Strengthening Value Chains (REVALUE) program in Manicaland province. Aimed at increasing the income of 8,550 farmers by at least 30 percent within 18 months, REVALUE brings together smallholder farmers and larger commercial agricultural companies to increase production and commercialization opportunities. Since its 2009 inception, REVALUE has increased yields for smallholder groundnut and sugar bean farmers, introduced paprika and sesame farming, and revitalized agro-dealing and the commercialization of farmer output.
In 2010, under a subcontract to Fintrac, IRD began implementation of the credit and market linkages component of the USAID-funded Zimbabwe Agricultural Incomes and Employment Development (Zim-AIED) program. Zim-AIED aims to increase incomes and food security for smallholder farmers and generate income and rural employment for agro-businesses through increased agricultural production and productivity, agro-processing, and investment.
