Members of a displaced family in their temporary shelter. |
Pakistan’s history stretches back for many millennia, with Persians, Greeks, Scythians, Arabs, Afghans, Turks, Mughals, and, most recently, British taking control of the area around the fertile Indus River Valley. Since the British left in 1947, Pakistan and its neighbor, India, have had a tense relationship, leading to three wars. The Pakistani military is now also struggling to control Islamist militants, who are mostly headquartered along the border with Afghanistan. These conflicts, and the resulting government focus on defense, have left Pakistan’s people with poorer health care, education, economic opportunity, and infrastructure.
