Children like these were kept from school by years of conflict

For many years, Liberia ranked right at the bottom of every human development survey. One a few of the 23 years between 1980 and 2003 were relatively peaceful. Most of that time, active conflict bloodied the small West African country, much of it fought by child soldiers. Development of the country was an impossible dream.

Since 2003, Liberia has been struggling to heal and provide even the most basic services for its citizens. The United Nations and other donor agencies have strong presences in the country, which has been run by a democratically elected government since 2005. IRD is helping through improving child nutrition and encouraging education.
