IRD opened its European regional office, the IRD Global Institute, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in late 2010. Its aim is to implement global development and humanitarian assistance programs funded by the European Community and other regional donors, and to collaborate with European-based organizations to develop new models of global sustainable development. Like its parent organization in Arlington, Virginia, the IRD Global Institute implements community-based programs worldwide that support economic development, better health, improved food security, and sustainable infrastructure. The Global Institute has provided humanitarian assistance to Haiti following the 2010 earthquake, support for refugees and drought victims in Somalia, Iraq, and psychosocial aid to children in Moldova and Priednestrovje. Current projects include capacity building for LGBT civil society organizations fighting stigma in Kosovo. For more information on the IRD Global Institute, please visit its website.
