This Friday's photo was taken in January 2009 in Afghanistan. It depicts a farm family member who participated in IRD's Afghanistan Vouchers for Increased Productive Agriculture (AVIPA) program. AVIPA aimed to increase rural family farm production and productivity while also strengthening links between the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and its people.
The USAID-funded project aimed to increase basic wheat crop production in Afghanistan by distributing wheat seed and fertilizer vouchers to 297,000 farmers in 18 provinces between September 2008 and August 2009. Twelve thousand tons of improved wheat seed and 55,000 tons of fertilizer were distributed. AVIPA Plus built on the success of AVIPA and expanded to include Helmand and Kandahar provinces.
